Spring 2024

🌍 More about me and BFB

Yikes! We are a bit behind in the old schedule!

Well, you know what they say the best-laid plans of mice, men and environmentalists.

Unfortunately, according to the Department of Work and Pensions, setting up and running a not-for-profit company like Boiling Frogs makes me “not gainfully self-employed”. It only took them 13 weeks to come to this decision after freezing our joint Universal Credit claim and not paying us any benefits that as it turns out we were entitled to. So it’s been a great start to 2024 for us. Maxing out credit cards, cancelling all direct debits and dealing with the aftermath by spending hours on hold phoning all our creditors. The highlight of the whole affair was being taken to court by the council and facing eviction and homelessness. A very special thanks go out to the wonderful people at Citizens Advice in Southend who helped us through a very difficult time.

The long and the short of it is that to continue to receive payments I have to find paid work for at least 17.5 hours a week or until I have enough coffers to pay myself a minimum wage from the business. For the other 17.5 hours, I am deemed to be volunteering for my own company.

Well, that doesn’t sound too harsh I hear you say and under normal circumstances, I would agree. However, one of the main reasons that I have tried to make a go of an internet-based company over the past couple of years other than the terrifying concept of the future facing our children and theirs is that the arthritis in my knees, hips and back have reduced my mobility and my capabilities quite dramatically. I have started on what the DWP call a health journey, which is a series of assessments of my health and capability to work. This I have been told will take quite some time.

So in the meantime, I will continue working on BoilingFrogsBlog.org raising awareness of the climate and ecological disaster unfolding around us and trying to get more people involved with the solutions. If anyone knows of any jobs that might suit my experience and current capabilities please let me know. Or of course, if anyone is reading this stuff and believes in what we are trying to get going then please feel free to donate if you can. If, of course, I have to find work to stop us living on the streets then I would prefer to find something in the care arena as I truly loved my job as an HCA with the NHS for just over 20 years and am still devastated that I can’t do it anymore.

So with that said I decided to make a quick review of BFB to determine if it had a future if I could only work on it part time. It’s all incredibly daunting and lots of times I want the world to just grow up and go away. Hopefully, people will offer help and things will start to snowball.

This is what we have planned:

  • Invite people to Vive

  • Use Vive to connect people and inspire them to learn from each other and collaborate in providing solutions.

  • Keep sharing the stories

We have many ideas but most of them are not our own. Our goal is to spread a message that no matter who you are or what you believe, you cannot simply ignore the climate and ecological emergency. It is important to understand that it will not ignore you in return.

So following my review, I have decided to do what I can when I can and try my best with the support of my family to deal with all the obstacles that the universe puts in my way.

We are learning so much while we research and campaign. NFTF BLOG is a way for us to pay it forward. I hope you find it informative and we would very much appreciate your help and support if you can when you can.

This is a petition:

Well, spring has sprung and the sun is bringing with it lots of new growth and a few insects not dead yet from the constant cutting back of flowers and the relentless spraying of highly toxic chemicals with absolutely no regard for the health effects on wildlife, children or companion animals.

Very sorry to @BeeFriendlyBrum and @PesticideCollab for my typos:

We believe that community energy is about so much more than dealing with our carbon output. It’s about shifting the balance of power back towards local communities. With more and more people relying on the internet for all their materialistic needs and wants businesses are rapidly packing up and pulling out leaving ghost towns in their wake.

With #CommunityEnergy at its centre we can start to reshape the way we provide the basic necessities to local people. A cooperatively run system that provides paid work which strengthens economic resilience by keeping money flowing locally. We cannot sit back and wait over the coming years for handouts from national entities or local authorities.

That sounds fantastic and we needed to find out more so I signed up for one of the local training sessions.

The course was great and I will tell you all about it soon.

This is, of course, a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and funds for your local community organization.

Thanks for reading this far if you did. Stay positive and have a great week!
